The Tidbit firmly believes that the Scream is the greatest and smartest horror film ever made. The franchise it created is decent, but doesn’t hold a candle to the original. Many would argue that the worst of the franchise was the third installment, where a film is being made about the Woodsborro murders and the killer begins stalking the original cast of characters, and the actors playing them in this fictional movie.
The movie ends with the killer being Sidney Prescott’s unknown half-brother, Roman, who has this whole back story about how he convinced Billy and Stu to kill in the original Scream. However, this was set to end very differently.
Matthew Lillard, who played Stu in the original flick, was a guest on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert, and explained how the ending of Scream 3 was to originally go down. Apparently, we were to find out that Stu was still alive and was in prison. From here, he was training young men on the outside how to be serial killers.
Right before this version of the film was to start production, Columbine happened. This lead filmmakers to change the ending, out of respect for the victims of that horrific event.
The film then suffered a series of rewrites, as parts of the plot were being leaked on the Internet. This lead to what the film is now – only okay. Regardless, all four films are worth a watch; especially as Halloween rounds the corner.
